What Is a SAP Calculation?
A SAP Calculation (Standard Assessment Procedure) is the government's method for assessing the energy performance of a dwelling. It is required under Part L of the Building Regulations for new builds and conversions, and for extensions where the simpler compliance checks are not enough.
The calculation uses the SAP methodology to model how a home performs across the year. It takes in the building fabric (U-values for walls, floors and roofs), air permeability, thermal bridging, the heating and hot water system, ventilation and any renewables, and produces an energy rating along with the figures Building Control need to sign off Part L.
There are two stages. A Design Stage SAP is produced from your drawings before work starts. An As-Built SAP is completed once the property is finished and produces the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
Who Needs SAP Calculations?
SAP Calculations are needed for most domestic projects. If you are building a new home, converting a building into a dwelling, or extending an existing one, you will usually need a SAP assessment.
New Builds
Every new dwelling needs a SAP Calculation, at design stage and again once built.
Learn more →Extensions
Many extensions comply without a full SAP. We find the simplest route, from a reference method check to a full calculation.
Learn more →Conversions
Barn, loft, garage and change-of-use conversions normally need SAP to meet the energy standards.

- Construction details or a build-up summary
- Heating and hot water specification
- Window and door schedule
